Project Summary

Diseases are caused by a range of risk factors, some of which are modifiable risk factors. Understanding the health cost burden associated with each modifiable risk factor can provide valuable insights for the health system, such as helping prioritize public health interventions that target the most harmful risk factors or designing programs that can reduce or eliminate multiple risk factors simultaneously.

The first phase of this project focused only on risk factors linked to prevalent diseases occurring in the country. However, the second phase will estimate provincial-level health costs and gather data across the entire country, while also extending the time frame of the data analyzed.

The objective of this research is to estimate the health cost burden from modifiable risk factors by utilizing data in part from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD 2019). GBD is a global study compiling data from multiple countries to calculate disease burdens, illnesses, and modifiable risk factors, while additional or alternative variables in this study will come from systematic literature reviews, population surveys, and national-level questionnaires.
