COVID-19 has shown that irresepctive of national borders, the infectious disease brings multi-dimensional challenges requiring concerted global and regional efforts to address it. In contrast to the European Union and the African Union, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the regional cooperation body in Southeast Asia, has had no equivalent regional disease control centre; the region has previously suffered as the epicentre of several public health crises such as Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Avian Influenza. Recently, ASEAN members have agreed to establish a Centre of this kind. HITAP, together with the National University of Singapore (NUS) is initiating an academic study that will examine lessons learned from other regional centres for disease prevention and control such as those in Europe and Africa to support the ASEAN Centre. This initiative, called the Southeast Asia Center for Infectious Disease Control (SEACID), aims to inform the process of operationalising this regional centre. Engagement and participation from regional decision-makers and HTA experts will be an asset to this study in providing inputs and contextual insights.
