Project Summary

Aging societies present a significant challenge for many countries, including those within the ASEAN region, driven by a burgeoning elderly population and declining birth rates. This demographic shift has profound implications, including a shrinking workforce that can impede economic growth and strain unsustainable social security and pension systems. Moreover, increased life expectancy necessitates a substantial rise in healthcare expenditure. While developed nations like Japan, Singapore, and the USA have proactively implemented strategies such as raising retirement ages and promoting active aging, the majority of ASEAN countries, with the exception of Singapore, lack a comprehensive plan to address this critical demographic transition. This project seeks to investigate the existing research gap in aging society preparedness within ASEAN nations through a rapid literature review and consultations. Additionally, it seeks to develop a robust conceptual framework to guide future research efforts in 2025 and beyond.
