Value-Based Healthcare aims to ensure that everyone receives appropriate, high-quality care that delivers the best possible health outcomes while making efficient use of healthcare resources. However, some medical procedures and services may offer little benefit compared with their potential risks, costs, or the burden they place on patients. Appropriate healthcare is therefore not about providing more care, but about providing the right care—choosing interventions that offer the greatest benefit for each patient based on the best available evidence.

This factsheet introduces the concept of Low-Value Care and explains why reducing the use of low-value services is a key step towards a more value-based, sustainable healthcare system that benefits patients, healthcare professionals, and society.
