No single dialysis is “green”. Each modality has different environmental hotspots and requires different reduction strategies.
HD (hemodialysis) impacts are driven mainly by electricity, water use, and patient travel, while PD (peritoneal dialysis) shifts more of the burden to dialysate production and distribution, consumables, and waste.
Environmental strategies should therefore be modality-specific: prioritize renewable energy, efficient RO/water systems, and lower-carbon travel for HD; and reduce plastics, packaging, distribution impacts, and waste for PD.
