- No single dialysis is “green”. Each modality has different environmental hotspots and requires different reduction strategies.
- HD (hemodialysis) impacts are driven mainly by electricity, water use, and patient travel, while PD (peritoneal dialysis) shifts more of the burden to dialysate production and distribution, consumables, and waste.
- Environmental strategies should therefore be modality-specific: prioritize renewable energy, efficient RO/water systems, and lower-carbon travel for HD; and reduce plastics, packaging, distribution impacts, and waste for PD.
